William H. Arnold

William Howard "Duke" Arnold (born January 18, 1901 in Dyersburg , Tennessee , † September 30, 1976 in Lake Forrest , Illinois ) was an American general.

Arnold studied from 1920 in West Point and graduated as Second Lieutenant of the Infantry in 1924. After completing the US Army officer course in Fort Benning in 1928, he was stationed in Hawaii (Schofield Barracks) and from 1934 to 1936 with the 15th Infantry Regiment in Tientsin in China. In 1938 he graduated from Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth . During World War II he was first deputy chief of staff and colonel in the 4th Corps in Fort Lewis , Washington. In 1943 he became Brigadier General and Chief of Staff of the 14th Corps and was deployed in the Pacific War ( Guadalcanal , New Orgies , Bougainville ). In November 1944 he became Major General and Commander of the 23rd Infantry Division with operations in the southern Philippines under Douglas MacArthur . In August 1945 he accepted the Japanese surrender on the island of Cebu. In December his division was disbanded.

1950 to 1952 he was commander of the allied military mission in Turkey and from 1953 to 1955 he was commander of the US Forces Austria as Lieutenant General. Back in the USA he became the commander of the 5th US Army in Chicago. In 1961 he retired.

He received the Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaves, the Silver Star , the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaves, the Bronze Star , the Air Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was married to Elizabeth Arnold (1905–1976) and is the father of nuclear engineer William Howard Arnold and grandfather of Nobel Prize winner Frances H. Arnold . Arnold is buried in Fort Sheridan.
