William Howley Goodenough

Lieutenant-General Sir William Howley Goodenough , KCB , FGS (born April 5, 1833 , † June 24, 1898 in Anerley ) was a British officer.

Life

William Howley Goodenough was born on April 5, 1833, the third son of Dr. Born Edmund Goodenough , Headmaster of Westminster School . He received his training in Westminster and at the Royal Military Academy Woolwich . After completing his schooling, Goodenough joined the Royal Artillery on June 20, 1849 as a second lieutenant .

On April 1, 1851, Goodenough was promoted to First Lieutenant. On January 1, 1856 he was promoted to captain, on July 20, 1858 to major. In 1857/58 he was transferred to India , where he was involved in the suppression of the Indian uprising . He was wounded during the siege of Lucknow .

On March 25, 1869, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. From 1871 to 1874 Goodenough was a military attaché in Vienna . This was followed by employment with and with the British Army quartermaster general . During the occupation of Egypt in 1882 under Garnet Joseph Wolseley in the course of the defeat of the Urabi movement , Colonel Goodenough commanded the artillery. From 1886 to 1889 he was General of Artillery at Headquarters .

From April 21, 1895, after Hercules Robinson had been recalled to Great Britain and left Cape Town, to May 5, 1897, the day of the arrival of Alfred Milner's successor , Goodenough served as Governor and High Commissioner of the Cape Colony and South Africa.

On December 21, 1864, Major Goodenough was accepted as a Fellow of the Geological Society of London .

Goodenough married Countess Anna Kinsky in 1874. The marriage resulted in two daughters.

Lieutenant-General William Howley Goodenough died on October 24, 1898 in Anerley .
