William Huntington Kirkpatrick
William Huntington Kirkpatrick (born October 2, 1885 in Easton , Pennsylvania , † November 28, 1970 in Cumberstone , Maryland ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1921 and 1923 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives ; later he became a federal judge .
Career
William Kirkpatrick was the son of Congressman William Sebring Kirkpatrick (1844-1932). He attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1905 the Lafayette College . After a subsequent law degree at the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his admission to the bar in 1908, he began to work in Easton in this profession. During World War I , he served first as a major and then as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Legal Department . He was a member of a commission to review court martial judgments.
Politically, Kirkpatrick became a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1920 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 26th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat Henry Joseph Steele on March 4, 1921 . Since he was not confirmed in 1922, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1923 .
After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Kirkpatrick initially practiced as a lawyer again. In March 1927, President Calvin Coolidge appointed him a judge in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. In 1933 he became presiding judge in this district; he held this office until 1958. He died on November 28, 1970 in Cumberstone.
