Thomas Wharton Phillips Jr. (born November 21, 1874 in New Castle , Lawrence County , Pennsylvania , †  January 2, 1956 in Penn , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1923 and 1927 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Phillips was the son of the congressman of the same name Thomas Wharton Phillips Sr. (1835-1912). He attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1894 the Phillips Academy in Andover ( Massachusetts ). He then studied until 1897 at the Sheffield Scientific School belonging to Yale University . In the following years he worked in the oil, gas and coal industries. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In June 1916 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Chicago .

In the 1922 congressional election , Phillips was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 26th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded William Huntington Kirkpatrick on March 4, 1923 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1927 . In 1926 he renounced another candidacy.

In 1926, 1930 and 1934 Phillips sought unsuccessfully to nominate his party for the gubernatorial elections in Pennsylvania. Otherwise he continued his previous activities. He became President of Phillips Gas and Oil Co. and Director of Butler Consolidated Coal Co. and Pennsylvania Investment and Real Estate Corp. Thomas Phillips died in Penn on January 2, 1956.
