Franz Ludwig von Erlach (born December 31, 1574 in Bern , † April 20, 1651 in Spiez ) was a mayor of the city of Bern.

Life

Franz Ludwig von Erlach went on a study trip to Padua , Venice and Rome in 1592 . He was baron of Spiez , lord of Schadau , Bümpliz , and Oberhofen . From 1596 he was a member of the Grand Council, from 1604 to 1610 mayor of Burgdorf , from 1611 to small council, from 1628 to Venner zu Schmieden and finally from 1629 to 1651 mayor of Bern. He was entrusted with 144 embassies, which included him in 1612 to the Margrave of Baden-Durlach, 1617 to Turin , 1622 to the French King Louis XIII. and led to Graubünden in 1625 .

In 1614, Franz Ludwig von Erlach commissioned the Ticino plasterer Antonio Castelli to build the baroque ballroom in Spiez Castle. He also commissioned a series of portraits by the Trier painter Bartholomäus Sarburgh , showing him and his family. Thanks to his mediation, the private library of the French diplomat and private scholar Jacques Bongars, now known as Bongarsiana, was donated to the Bern Burger Library .
