William J. Holtman

William Joseph Holtman (born September 23, 1921 in Baltimore , Maryland ; died February 11, 2014 in Lakewood , Colorado ) was an American manager in the railroad industry. He was president of the Denver, Rio Grande and Western Railroad from 1977 to 1988.

Life

William J. Holtman grew up in the Denver area , where his family moved in 1924. He graduated from North High School in 1939. In 1943 he graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in metallurgy . Immediately afterwards he was called up for military service. In the United States Army Air Forces he flew from 1944 to 1946 as a pilot in the China-Burma-India war zone. He was released as First Lieutenant in 1946 .

On February 5, 1947, he began his tenure with the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad as a senior metallurgist. He later worked as Trainmaster, Superintendent, Vice President for Operations and finally succeeded G. Aydelott in 1977 as President, CEO and Chairman of DRGW and Rio Grande Industries. He stayed in this position even after the Anschutz group took over Rio Grande in 1984 . After the merger with Southern Pacific Transportation in 1988, he was Vice Chairman until his retirement on December 31, 1992. From January 1991, he was responsible for the operation of the rail network, among other things.

He married Doris Ruth Jump on April 12, 1947. He is the father of a son.
