William Legge, 10th Earl of Dartmouth , known to the public under the name William Dartmouth , MEP (born September 23, 1949 in London ), is a British politician of the UK Independence Party and nobleman . Until 1997 he held the courtesy title Viscount Lewisham .

Life

Legge is a maternal grandchild of the author Dame Barbara Cartland . Diana Spencer was his stepsister. Legge attended Eton College and Christ Church College , Oxford . He graduated from Harvard Business School .

After he inherited his title of nobility in 1997 on the death of his father Gerald Legge, 9th Earl of Dartmouth , he was a member of the House of Lords . With the House of Lords Act 1999 he lost his seat in parliament. Until 2007 he was a member of the Conservative Party .

Legge switched to the UK Independence Party . In 2009 he became a member of the European Parliament . In June 2009, he married former model Fiona Campbell, who was first married to Matt Handbury, the nephew of Rupert Murdoch . From a previous relationship with Claire Kavanagh he has a son, Gerald Glen Legge (* 2005). Since his son is out of wedlock, Legge's younger brother Rupert Legge (* 1951) is considered the probable heir ( Heir Presumptive ) of his title instead of him .

As an EU parliamentarian, Legge (listed as William ( The Earl of ) Dartmouth in the EU Parliament ) is a member of the Committee on International Trade and an alternate member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs .
