William Maclay (politician, 1765)
William Maclay (born March 22, 1765 in Lurgan , Franklin County , Province of Pennsylvania , † January 4, 1825 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1815 and 1819 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Maclay attended public schools in his home country. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1800, he began to work in this profession in Chambersburg . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson in the late 1790s . In 1805 and 1806 he was a County Commissioner in Franklin County. From 1807 to 1808 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives . In 1809 he became an associate judge in the Cumberland Judicial District.
In the congressional election of 1814 Maclay was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded John Rea on March 4, 1815 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1819 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Maclay practiced as a lawyer again. He died on January 4, 1825 in his hometown of Lurgan.
