William Marshal, 1st Baron Marshal

William Marshal, 1st Baron Marshal (* around 1277; † 23 or 24 June 1314 at Bannockburn ) was an English nobleman and hereditary Marshal of Ireland .

William came from a branch of the Marshal family . He was a son of John Marshal and his wife Hawise. His father died in 1282. For 2500 Marks , John de Bohun , a younger son of Humphrey de Bohun, 2nd Earl of Hereford from King Edward I, acquired the guardianship of the minor William and the right to manage his property. In February 1308, William was allowed to wear the king's golden spurs in the procession for the coronation of Edward II , but his attempt to claim the office of Marshal of England against Nicholas Segrave as a member of the Marshal family was unsuccessful. On December 8, 1309 he was appointed as Baron Marshal in the Parliament appointed. In 1314 he took part in King Edward II's campaign against Scotland, where he fell at the Battle of Bannockburn .

William Marshal had married Christian Fitzwalter , a daughter of Robert Fitzwalter, 1st Baron Fitzwalter and his wife Devorguilla de Burgh . He had at least three children with her, including:

After the childless death of his son John, his daughter Hawise became his heir, who also passed on the right to the title of Baron Marshal to her children from her marriage to Robert de Morley.
