William Menking
William Bill Menking (born 1947 at Ramey Air Force Base in Aguadilla , Puerto Rico , † April 11, 2020 in Tribeca ) was an American architect , author and architectural historian.
Life
Menking grew up in California's Central Valley. He studied architecture at the University of California, Berkeley (Bachelor of Arts in architecture and urban studies) and traveled abroad to meet the leaders of radical architectural movements such as Archizoom , Superstudio and Gruppo UFO . He was an author and curator with a particular interest in the radical architectural movements of the 1960s and 70s. After his trip home to New York , he first worked as a waiter in Studio 54 and then as a film location scout, later also for the TV show Miami Vice . In the 1990s he moved to London and studied at the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London (Master of Science) and wrote for the British publications "The Architects' Journal and Building Design". He completed a master's degree in urban planning (MS in city and regional planning) at the Pratt Institute and completed a doctoral degree in art history at the City University of New York . Menking taught at the Pratt Institute for almost 30 years.
Menking, who founded The Architect's Newspaper (A / N) with his wife Diana Darling in 2003 , was also the editor-in-chief of A / N. As a writer of A / N, he has written hundreds of editorials. In 2008 he was commissioner of the US pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale.
Bill Menking died of complications from cancer at the age of 72.
