William Mudford
William Mudford (born January 8, 1782 in London , † March 10, 1848 in London) was a British essayist and journalist. His short story The Iron Shroud is considered a model for Edgar Allan Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum .
Mudford was the son of a little businessman in Piccadilly , London. He worked early as a journalist for magazines such as Blackwood's and Fraser's Magazine . As an autodidact, he acquired a considerable education, but was rather critical of the formal classical education. Politically, Mudfod stood on the side of the Tories for life . His great opponent and despiser was William Hazlitt .
Despite a major financial setback from failed stock speculation, he ended his prosperous life as owner of the Kentish Observer in Canterbury and editor-in-chief of John Bull Magazine .
