William Riley McKeen (born October 2, 1869 in Terre Haute , Vigo County , Indiana , † October 19, 1946 in Santa Barbara , California ) was an American engineer.

He was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad as a "Superintentent of Motive Power and Machinery" (for example, "Head of Department for Propulsion Power and Machinery"). On behalf of his boss Edward Henry Harriman , he developed a gasoline railcar with mechanical power transmission. With the support of Harriman, he then went into business for himself with the production of this McKeen railcar .

The initially great economic success dried up because he couldn't get the teething troubles of this innovative vehicle under control.

After the Union Pacific liquidated his company, he retired to California as a farmer.
