William Starling Sullivant (born January 15, 1803 in Franklinton , today Columbus , Ohio , † April 30, 1873 in Columbus ) was an American bryologist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Sull. "

He was the son of Lucas Sullivant (1765-1823), founder of Franklinton, who later became Columbus, and Sarah Starling. He graduated from Ohio University in Athens and from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in 1823. He was one of the leading experts on mosses and liverworts in North America in his day. In 1845 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1847 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina , and in 1872 of the National Academy of Sciences .

As a bryologist, he later worked with Leo Lesquereux , an immigrant from Switzerland , who also continued the manual on the mosses of North America that had been started together.

He was married three times. His son TS Sullivant was a well-known cartoonist who u. a. published in Life Magazine .
