William Seymour, 2nd Duke of Somerset (* 1588 - 24 October 1660 in Covent Garden ) was an English nobleman.

Life

William was a son of Edward Seymour, Lord Beauchamp , and his consort Honora Rogers. From his grandfather Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford , he inherited the title of 2nd Baron Beauchamp prematurely in February 1621 through Writ of Acceleration , before he inherited the title of 2nd Earl of Hertford when his grandfather died on April 6, 1621 .

On June 22, 1610 he secretly married the English heir to the throne Arbella Stuart . Since Arbella's wedding took place without the king's approval , they were both incarcerated in the Tower but were able to escape. Arbella failed to escape, while William made it safely to Ostend . Arbella died in the Tower of London in 1615 .

During the Civil War he was a loyal royalist on the side of King Charles I , who made him Marquess of Hertford on June 3, 1640 . Even during the imprisonment of Charles I, he was loyal to the king, who temporarily entrusted him with the Prince of Wales .

In the year of his death in 1660, as part of the Stuart Restoration, the title Duke of Somerset was restored for him, which had been revoked from his great-grandfather Edward Seymour in 1552 . Since his first three sons died before him, his grandson William , son of his third son Henry, who died in 1654 , inherited his title of nobility as 3rd Duke.
