William Shadrack Shallenberger

William Shadrack Shallenberger (born November 24, 1839 in Mount Pleasant , Westmoreland County , Pennsylvania , †  April 15, 1914 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1883 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Shallenberger attended the public schools in his home country as well as the Mount Pleasant Academy . In 1862 he graduated from Lewisburg University , now Bucknell University . Between 1862 and 1864 he served in the Union Army during the Civil War . He then worked in Rochester in retail. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In 1872 and 1874 he was their district chairman in Beaver County .

In the congressional election of 1876 Shallenberger was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington in the 24th  constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded John Winfield Wallace on March 4, 1877 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1883 . From 1881 he was chairman of the committee for public properties.

In 1897 William Shallenberger was appointed Second Assistant Postmaster General to the Federal Post Office by the new US President William McKinley . He held this office until 1907. He died on April 15, 1914 in the federal capital Washington and was buried in the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia .
