William Thorold (architect)

William Thorold (born October 9, 1798 in Methwold , Norfolk , † December 17, 1878 in Thorpe Hamlet , Norwich ) was a mill builder , architect and civil engineer in Norwich, Norfolk.

William Thorold was the son of a farmer. He was apprenticed to George Shafto and later to John Fisher Gurling in St Martin's Lane, Norwich. He was involved in the renovation of the water mills in Bawburgh in 1829 . In the summer of 1830 he built in Felthorpe a windmill , and 1831 in Limpenhoe a tower windmills pump . In 1836 he was involved as an architect and mill builder in the construction of the steam-powered St. James' Yarn Mill in Norwich. He built other watermills in Taverham in 1982 and in 1849.

Activity as an architect

Between 1836 and 1837 he designed the blueprints for the factories in Thetford , Pulham Market , Rockland All Saints , Kenninghall , Hindringham and Great Snoring all in Norfolk, and in 1837 a factory in Rochford , Essex .

Activity as a civil engineer

As a civil engineer, he was responsible for the construction of the Acle Straight , a road between Acle and Great Yarmouth , from 1830–31 . In 1843 he directed the New Cut called canal - cutting for the River Yare in Thorpe St. Andrew , through which the construction and operation of two swing bridges could be saved when the Norwich and Yarmouth Railway was built. He became a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers before 1845 . In the early 1860s he was involved in the drainage of Ten Mile Bank, Hilgay, and the Middle Level, Kings Lynn .

In 1868 he presented "Railways on Turnpike Roads" to the British Association , in which he introduced a monorail concept that could be laid along roads at ground level, and 20 foot (6 m) radius arcs and 1 in 12 ( 83 ). The drive could take place as with the Kundala Valley Railway with draft animals or with the Patiala State Monorail Trainways built by William Thorold with steam locomotives.
