William Austin Veech (born December 24, 1938 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American mathematician .

Veech studied at Dartmouth College (Bachelor's degree in 1960) and received his PhD from Princeton University in 1963 with Salomon Bochner ( Almost Automorphic Functions ). He has been a professor at Rice University in Houston since the 1970s , where he is "Edgar Odell Lovett Professor". In 1968/69, 1972 and 1976/77 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study . Veech deals with topological dynamics, ergodic theory , function theory (dynamics in Teichmüller spaces ) and almost periodic functions .

From 1971 to 1973 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
