Willian Lara

Willian Lara (* 1957 in El Socorro , Guárico , Venezuela ; † September 10, 2010 in Río Uverito , Venezuela) was a Venezuelan politician .

biography

After attending school, he first studied social communication at the Universidad Central de Venezuela and then completed a postgraduate degree in political science at the Universidad Simón Bolívar . He later worked as a professor of political science at the Universidad Simón Bolívar.

He began his political career as a member of the Movimiento Quinta República (MVR), founded in 1997 by Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Chávez . For this he was elected in 1998 as a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress and was also chairman of the domestic affairs committee. After the founding of the National Constituent Assembly, he was elected member in 1999 as a representative of the MVR and at the same time chaired the committee for political administration and elections. At the same time, he was National Organizational Director of the MVR.

In 2000 he ran for the office of governor of the state of Miranda , but was defeated by the incumbent and candidate of the Comité de Organización Política Electoral Independiente (COPEI), Enrique Mendoza . In the same year, however, he was elected a member of the newly formed National Assembly and re-elected in 2005. Between 2000 and 2002 he was also the first President of the National Assembly .

After President Hugo Chávez appointed him Minister for Information and Communication in his cabinet in 2006, he renounced his mandate in the National Assembly. He held the ministerial office until his replacement by Andrés Izarra .

In November 2008 he was elected as a candidate for the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), newly founded by Chávez in March 2007 as the successor to the MVR, for governor of the state of Guárico.

Lara was killed in a car accident on September 10, 2010 on the Troncal 2 motorway near the capital of the state of Guárico, San Juan de los Morros .

On September 11, 2010 he was posthumously awarded the Grand Cross of the Orden del Libertador by President Chávez . His successor as governor of Guárica was the previous president of the Federal Legislative Council, Arturo Suárez .
