Willie MacFarlane (born March 17, 1930 in Leith , † March 11, 2010 ) was a Scottish football player and coach .

Player career

MacFarlane began his career in 1953 as a defender at Hibernian Edinburgh . At the side of the "Famous Five", which included the players Gordon Smith , Bobby Johnstone , Lawrie Reilly , Eddie Turnbull and Willie Ormond , he undertook a tour of South America with the club, during which he ran up at Maracanã Stadium . With the club he reached in the European Cup of National Champions 1955/56 after successes over Rot-Weiss Essen and Djurgårdens IF the semifinals against Stade Reims , in which he played against Raymond Kopa . After two defeats, he missed the final with the team.

In 1958 MacFarlane left the club for Raith Rovers . There he played three seasons before ending his career at Greenock Morton .

Coaching career

After the end as an active player, MacFarlane moved to the coaching bench. At the amateur club Hawick Royal Albert , he began his coaching career in 1967, which led him to Stirling Albion the following summer . There he convinced those in charge of his former club Hibernian, who hired him as the successor to Bob Shankly as coach. After early elimination in the national cup and the league cup , he was dismissed in 1970 after a change of club owner following a defeat against Liverpool FC in the trade fair cup . MacFarlane then worked as a bookmaker in Edinburgh. In 1978 he briefly returned as a coach when he was in charge of Meadowbank Thistle until 1980 .
