Willie Mosconi

William Joseph "Willie" Mosconi (born June 27, 1913 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , USA ; † September 12, 1993 in Haddon Heights, New Jersey , USA ) was an American pool player. Between 1941 and 1957 he won the world title thirteen times.

On March 19, 1954, he became the world record holder of the highest series in the billiards variant 14 and 1 endless when he punched 526 balls in a row during an exhibition match in Springfield, Ohio . On May 28, 2019, this record was surpassed by the American John Schmidt with a series of 626 bullets.

Through numerous exhibition fights and his books Willie's Game and Willie Mosconi on Pocket Billiards , he contributed significantly to the popularity of the sport. He also advised the actors of the film Haie der Großstadt (English. The Hustler ) on the billiards scenes and has a guest appearance in the film. In 1980 he made a cameo in the comedy The Man from Baltimore .

In honor of Willie Mosconi, the Mosconi Cup has been held annually between Europe and the USA since 1994 . Since 1967 he has been a member of the Hall of Fame of the Billiard Congress of America .
