Welcome to the bloody city is a Canadian-British science fiction film , and Western by Peter Sasdy from the year 1977 .
action
Five people find themselves outside the western town of Blood City . They have no memory of their past and do not know how they got here. For information they only find a short note that they are all convicted murderers. In the city they only have two options: to work as slaves or to work their way up in society; what only happens by killing the other. Michael Lewis decides to fight and kill. What he does not know: Blood City is a virtual reality created by scientists with the help of computers . The military aims to select elite fighters through this program.
background
The German premiere took place in 1982 on video cassette. Parallels to Westworld , in which virtual reality is also the focus of the plot, cannot be overlooked.
reception
The lexicon of international film found it to be “a technically quite skilful science fiction film, whose criticism of the misuse of modern technology and the manipulation of humans is ultimately subject to the fascination of this idea”. On the other hand, the critics of Variety judged , “even if the original conception of the film may have contained traces of intelligence, the Swiss cheese-holed script would become less interesting and incoherent with every twist. Consequently, the mix of science fiction and westerns is not satisfactory either in its own category or as a whole. "
