Wincanton is a small town in the South Somerset district of Somerset in Great Britain. It has 5272 (2011) inhabitants and is located on the A303 , the main link between London and the south-west.
history
In the Domesday Book , the city is called Wincaleton listed in the will of Richard Bekyn 1540 as Wyncaunton and in the files of "Feoffees of the Fair and Market" 1693 Winecaunton . It was not until 1724 that the current spelling prevailed. In the Middle Ages, the city had a market, but did not acquire market rights until 1556. In 1707 the city burned down. During the Napoleonic Wars , the city had a POW camp.

In April 2009 Terry Pratchett inaugurated several streets in the new Ringwell district that have street names from Ankh-Morpork, such as Peach Pie Street and Treacle Mine Road .
