British Rail MPV

The Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) from Windhoff Bahn- und Anlagentechnik is a modular vehicle concept that emerged from the CargoSprinter .

description

The basic structure of the MPV is comparable to the end car of the Cargosprinter. It consists of a flat car- like car with a driver's cab and engine. Various superstructures can be attached to the loading area using twist locks for the maintenance of track systems and overhead lines , for fire-fighting and rescue missions and for the transport of goods . This vehicle is offered in a two- and four-axle version as well as a “multi-purpose wagon” in one wagon version.

The British network operator British Rail bought eight MPVs for network maintenance in 1999 . One of these trains was used in March 2005 for a five-week test for transporting timber between Aberystwyth, Welsh and Chirk . For this purpose, two power cars with intermediate cars were converted for a total of £ 15,000. After 19 test runs, this attempt ended on April 1, 2005.

In February 2002 the Australian CRT Group bought an MPV with seven intermediate cars for freight transport in the Melbourne area . Through a takeover of the CRT Group, this vehicle was initially owned by QR Limited and now owned by its successor company Aurizon .

For the maintenance of the HSL Zuid high-speed line , the Dutch Railways bought two 100 km / h MPV-based maintenance vehicles from Windhoff in 2008.

In Switzerland, BLS AG and SBB use the vehicle as an extinguishing and rescue train . In 2004, BLS and SBB each bought a vehicle called the LRZ 04 for the Lötschberg base tunnel . By 2009, SBB bought a total of eight more units of a further developed type, which is called LRZ 08 there.

A total of six MPVs were delivered in 2008 for the maintenance of the Taiwanese high-speed line .

The Austrian construction company Alpine bought two overhead line inspection multiple units based on the MPV in the spring of 2011.

The two-axle version is used as construction and maintenance trains by SBB (35 units) and Jernbaneverket (21 units).

In 2016, SBB also ordered three more fire and rescue trains. These trains based on the MPV are to be used in Geneva, Melide and Brig and put into service in 2018. This updated version of the trains is called LRZ 18.
