The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) use the fire and rescue train (LRZ) to refer to special rail vehicles for rescuing people and goods (especially in train tunnels), general fire fighting (especially in the event of fires in the immediate vicinity of railway systems) and the oil service.

There are currently 16 fire engines and rescue trains stationed on the SBB network, for example in Basel , Biasca , Bern , Biel / Bienne , Chiasso , Brig , Brugg , Erstfeld , Geneva , Lausanne , Olten , Rapperswil SG , Rotkreuz , St. Gallen , Winterthur and Zurich . This means that incident locations across Switzerland can be reached on high-risk routes within 30 - 60 minutes.

LRZ 96 The old fire and rescue trains of the 1996 generation (LRZ 96) are not self-driving. As a rule, mainline and shunting locomotives of the type Am 843 are used as traction means . The LRZ 96 consist of a tank fire engine, an equipment vehicle and a gas-tight ambulance.

Self-propelled fire fighting and rescue trains have been in use since 2004. The LRZ 04 consists of a gas-tight rescue vehicle, a tank fire engine and an equipment vehicle. The rescue vehicle and the equipment vehicle are each powered by 2 power packs (diesel engine with turbocharger, automatic transmission with built-in retarder and cooling system). The power per Powerpack is 315 kW and the maximum speed is 100 km / h. The driver's cabs are all pressure-tight and have a breathing air supply. Overall, the LRZ 04 has a supply of breathing air of around 2 million liters, stored in 50 liter pressure bottles.

In November 2006, SBB AG decided to purchase eight new fire-fighting and rescue trains 08 (LRZ 08). Again, the manufacturer consortium Windhoff Bahn- und Anlagentechnik , Dräger Safety , Joseph Meyer and Vogt AG delivered these vehicles. The LRZ 08 are a further development of the LRZ 04. The LRZ 08 are self-propelled (diesel-hydraulic drive) and consist of a tank extinguisher, an equipment and an ambulance. The total of 4 power packs of the equipment and rescue vehicle deliver 390 kW each. The maximum speed when traveling alone is 100 km / h. The maximum net trailer load is 2,500 t up to 5 ‰ horizontal inclination. The fire fighting truck has a water tank with 44,000 liters and a tank for foam extract with 1,800 liters. The last delivery took place in Olten in autumn 2010 .

Three more vehicles have been ordered from the Windhoff Bahn- und Anlagentechnik and Dräger Safety consortium for the Geneva , Melide and Brig locations . These trains, known as LRZ 18, are to be used in the Lötschberg base tunnel , the Simplon route and in Valais , on the new CEVA route , in the Lake Geneva region and in southern Ticino from 2018 . At the Brig and Melide locations, 4-part LRZs are used, consisting of an equipment vehicle, a tank fire engine and two rescue vehicles. The one in Geneva will be in 3 parts, i.e. H. only delivered with an ambulance.

In autumn 2016, SBB AG made use of the option to purchase three additional fire and rescue trains LRZ 18 (2nd series). It is planned to operate in Zurich , Winterthur and Bern . The LRZ 18 Zurich is delivered in 4 parts, the other two trains in 3 parts. All LRZ 18 are only with the European Train Control System (ETCS) equipped

The trains at SBB are operated by the intervention teams. Specially trained firefighters from the bases of nearby militia or professional fire departments can be called in to intensify the intervention.

By mid-2021, a total of 17 LRZ fire-fighting and rescue trains of the new generations will be in use (1 × LRZ 04, 8 × LRZ 08, 2 × LRZ 14 and 6 × LRZ 18). One train will alternately be available as a reserve vehicle. The old, non-powered LRZ generations 76 and 96 will be retired by the end of 2019.
