Architecture and history

The wind tunnel of the Technical University of Darmstadt was built in 1935 and inaugurated in 1936. In 1974 and 1981 the wind tunnel was technically renewed.

The wind tunnel is the only structure on the site of the historic August Euler airfield that has been preserved in its original form, material and function . The outside of the wind tunnel is a simple functional building . It consists of a visible from the outside concrete supporting structure with a dark red brick facade .

The concept for the wind tunnel was developed in 1935 by Professor Franz Nikolaus Scheubel . The wind tunnel was generously designed for the needs of the time. The wind tunnel is still used by the Technical University for research purposes.

The wind tunnel is a technically unusual facility. In contrast to the usual wind tunnels, this system is not constructed horizontally but vertically .

After the end of the Second World War , the wind tunnel was not destroyed or dismantled. However, in 1945 the university staff dismantled the most important systems inside the wind tunnel building in good time.

The building was used by the Americans as a casino in the years after 1945 . In 1954 the wind tunnel was returned to the university.

Stylistically belonging solid acting structure with its flat roof into the phase of Modern . In addition to the façade design typical of the time, the building has some striking design details; the entrance area with door frame, the semicircular entrance stairs, two lights and a window grille next to the entrance. The coat of arms eagle of the Third Reich in the upper area of the east facade with a laurel wreath in the claws and the severed swastika are also striking .
