Winfried Nöth (born September 12, 1944 in Gerolzhofen ) is a German English linguist , linguist and semioticist .

After graduating from high school in Braunschweig in 1963, Nöth studied English, French and Portuguese in Münster, Geneva, Lisbon and Bochum from 1965 to 1969 and obtained a doctorate in 1971 at the Ruhr University Bochum with a thesis that was awarded the university prize. Also in Bochum, he completed his habilitation in 1976 as Walter A. Koch's assistant , taught in Bochum and Aachen before he was appointed full professor (C4) for English linguistics at the University of Kassel in 1978 .

In 1985 Nöth went to the University of Wisconsin in Green Bay , USA, as a visiting professor, and in 1994 to the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo in Brazil. Since 1999 he has been Director of the Scientific Center for Cultural Research at the University of Kassel and President of the German Society for Semiotics. His handbook of semiotics (first published in 1985) gives a comprehensive overview of the history and various directions of semiotics and introduces its most important representatives.
