The tiny spruce bark beetle ( Crypturgus pusillus ) is a weevil from the subfamily of the bark beetle (Scolytinae). Since it creates its breeding systems in the bark of the host trees, it is counted among the bark breeders. It lives monogamous on conifers as a space parasite in the vicinity and in the duct systems of other bark beetles.

features

The black-brown colored beetles are one to 1.2 millimeters long and have a cylindrical body. The pronotum obscured when viewed from above the head and is only punctured, ie without bumps and scales. The matt wing covers have fine scales. The antennae and legs are light brown, the antennae flagella is two-part and the antennae lobe has an indicated seam. It is irregular and broadly ovoid.

distribution

The species is common in Europe .

Way of life

The tiny spruce bark beetle occurs mainly on spruce ( Picea ), preferably the common spruce ( Picea abies ), but also the Siberian spruce ( Picea obovata ), the Caucasian spruce ( Picea orientalis ) and Picea ayanensis . It also uses firs ( Abies ) and pines ( Pinus ) and is occasionally found on Douglas fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii ) and European larch ( Larix decidua ). It colonizes the bark tissue in and next to the duct systems of other bark beetle species. The feeding pattern is characterized by short, irregular, curved, spur-shaped, tortuous larval tunnels. They like to start in the mother tunnels or larval tunnels of the other bark-breeding species and can then be driven into unpopulated bark tissue. As a space parasite, they can hinder the development of the other bark-breeding beetles, as the bark tissue that has already been eaten away lacks the necessary nutrients for optimal development. Two generations are trained. The flight time is from April to May.
