offer

Similar to eBay , small businesses and manufacturers sell goods directly to consumers on Wish . Mostly cheap goods are offered with high discounts . Wish itself does not offer any goods, but only acts as an intermediary and receives a commission for it . Most of the providers come from China . You can pay in Germany with various credit cards, PayPal, Google Wallet, Apple Pay, EBANX, iDeal and Klarna .

In 2017, the company added Wish Outlet , which sells branded products from overflowing stocks at discounted prices. Wish also added the Wish Express service , which offers faster delivery.

Wish also operates the four other specialized shopping apps:

  • Geek (focused on electronics items),
  • Mom (focused on family and children),
  • Cute ( cosmetics )
  • and Home (decoration and house).

Wish also has a local marketplace app called Wish Local , which is similar to Ebay Classified Ads and is aimed at selling used goods in the local area.

history

In 2010, Wish was created as a wishlist creation app . The site encouraged users to see similar products on other websites and generated revenue through a pay-per-click model on the sites.

In 2013, Wish became an e-commerce website after merchants were asked to host their products directly on the app and Wish took a commission for doing so. In late 2015, Business Insider reported that Amazon and Alibaba were trying a takeover bid on Wish.

In 2018, Wish announced its integration with the multichannel e-commerce platform Expandly .

User numbers

The shopping app claims to have over 300 million users around the world and sell more than two million products every day. The young target group is particularly addressed. Wish became the most downloaded shopping app in the US in 2017 . During the year, Wish had 32.5 million downloads on the iOS App Store and Google Play Store in the US. By comparison, Amazon had only 29.2 million. In 2018, the Wish shopping app reached a total of over 100 million users on the iOS and Android platforms .

Finances

The turnover is one billion US dollars , the profit so far only in the single-digit million range. In the previous years, sales had almost doubled annually.

The startup has received more than $ 1 billion in funding from several venture capital firms including Temasek , DST Global , GGV Capital , Founders Fund, and Jerry Yang's AME Cloud Ventures , and now has over 300 employees.

marketing

Wish has mainly advertised on social networks such as Facebook and Instagram in the past few years . Wish is one of the largest advertisers on Facebook, reportedly spending $ 500 million a year on Facebook ads alone.

As part of the 2018 soccer World Cup in Russia , the operators published a commercial with soccer players Paul Pogba and Neymar , which had over ten million views within a few days.

criticism

Among other things, Chip Online , t3n and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung criticize the quality of the goods, the shipping time of around 30 days and the lack of a guarantee on deliveries from individual dealers as well as the potential misuse of data. In addition, taxes , customs and shipping costs can greatly increase the actually low price. In addition, there may be problems with complaints with dealers outside Europe. Furthermore, the app claims many authorizations such as access to contact data as well as to storage, networks and media files.

The reasons for the success are the low prices and the bargain hunting , which should be particularly attractive to young and low-income people. Furthermore, the site is aimed at smartphone users who are more inclined to make purchases than desktop users ( mobile commerce ).
