Witold Zuchiewicz

Witold Aleksander Zuchiewicz (born December 13, 1955 in Krakow , Poland ; † August 27, 2012 ibid) was a Polish geologist who dealt in particular with Quaternary research , tectonics (especially the Carpathian Mountains ) and geomorphology . He is considered a pioneer in neotectonics in Poland.

Zuchiewicz studied geography at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow with a diploma in 1978. From 1979 he was at the Institute of Geology. In 1981 he received his doctorate there in geology and in 1988 his habilitation in the field of structural geology and geomorphology. In 1982 he became an assistant and in 1990 an assistant professor. In 2001 he received a full professorship at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow (and was President of the Scientific Council of the Geological Institute from 1996 to 2007) and in 2007 at the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy Cracow (AGH) in Cracow.

He was visiting scholar in Padua, Stockholm, Udine, Utah (Logan) and London (Brunel University). In addition to field studies in the Carpathians and Sudetes, he also undertook such studies in Sweden, the Southern Alps, the Basin and Range Province , Vietnam (he received several Vietnamese awards) and Laos.

In 2007 he received the Serge von Bubnoff Medal .

From 1993 he was editor of Folia Quarternaria and from 2002 to 2011 of Annales Societas Geologorum Poloniae. From 1995 to 1999 he was co-editor of Przeglad Geologiczny and since 2008 of Geological Quarterly. He was a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences since 2004.

From 1991 to 1995 he was secretary of the INQUA Neotectonics Commission . From 1987 to 1989 he was on the Council of the Polish Geological Society.
