Wittelsberg observation point
The Wittelsberger Warte (also: Wittelsberger Schanze ) in the Ebsdorfergrund district of Wittelsberg ( Marburg-Biedenkopf district , Hesse ) is a medieval observatory that was built in 1431 by Landgrave Ludwig I to monitor traffic on the Long Hesse . It is the best-known and best-preserved part of a Landwehr that was supposed to secure Hesse against the Catholic Kurmainz and was an outpost of Frauenberg Castle .
The Protestant parish church, built in the classicism style in 1844, is in the immediate southern neighborhood of the waiting room ; to the west of the waiting room and church is the cemetery.
location
The Wittelsberger Warte stands on a 257.8 m high basalt dome, which towers over the immediately adjacent settlement area of Wittelsberg by a maximum of 40 m, on the southeast edge of the Amöneburg basin . It is located on the western outskirts of the eponymous village.

The Landwehr, of which the Wittelsberger Warte was a part, ran north-east to Roßdorf and south-west to Heskem , where waiting areas once also stood.
The control room is a round tower surrounded by a wall-ditch system with vertical loopholes for the use of crossbows and handguns. The entrance was raised and could only be reached via ladders. A palisade probably rose on the wall .
Today an arcade made of hornbeam leads from the village to the watch tower and church. The tower cannot be entered, but from its foot there is also a good view of the Amöneburg basin and the like. a. to Frauenberg and Amöneburg .

The Schanze , as the waiting area is also called, is one of the oldest preserved buildings in the region and is the landmark of both the Wittelsberg district and the large community of Ebsdorfergrund, whose coat of arms it adorns as the main motif.
