The Frauenberg is with a height of 379.4  m above sea level. NHN the second highest independent elevation of the Lahnberge between Frauenberg and Cappel in the central Hessian district of Marburg-Biedenkopf . Since the Frauenberg castle ruins stand on it with a 360-degree panoramic view, it is a popular excursion destination in the region of the city of Marburg .

The Frauenberg rises in the south of the main ridge of the Lahnberge ridge, which extends in a north-south direction. While parts of its north, west and south slopes belong to Marburg's urban area, the high elevations with the summit are part of the municipality of Ebsdorfergrund . The latter is 500 m southwest of Frauenberg and 1.7 km west of Beltershausen (two districts of Ebsdorfergrund) and 1 km northeast of Bortshausen , 2.2 km east of Ronhausen and 2.5 km south-southeast of Cappel (both as the crow flies ) (three districts from Marburg).

The volcanic basalt - summit of the mountain is slightly to the north - to the center of Lahnberge - inclined, while a little less steep, but very deep to the state road 3089 Cappel- to the south of the mountain Ebsdorf at altitudes around 200  m flattens. The saddle to the southern Lahn Mountains, never exceeding 300  m , is located on the state road southeast of the summit, at an altitude of about 250  m .

The summit region of the Frauenberg and the lower parts of its north, west and south flanks are forested; An agriculturally used area stretches around the summit region. The nature reserve Frauenberg near Beltershausen ( CDDA no. 163142; designated 1985; 9.81  hectares ) is located on its high altitude .

Natural allocation

The Frauenberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group West Hessisches Bergland (No. 34), in the main unit Marburg-Gießener Lahntal (348) and in the subunit Marburger Bergland (348.0) to the natural area Lahnberge (348.01). To the east, its landscape falls into the arable land of the subunit Ebsdorfer Grund (347.2), the south-western part of the main unit Amöneburg Basin (347).

history

Frauenberg Castle, which is now only partially preserved , was built in 1252 by Duchess Sophie von Brabant , the daughter of Saint Elisabeth , and gradually fell into disrepair after being stormed from 1470 to 1489 and no longer inhabited after 1528.

The Hohe Meißner can only be seen on a very few days, and because of the curvature of the earth, only the summit plateau can be seen; see partial panorama of Meißner and Knüll with excellent visibility .

The Wittstrauch

The approximately 322  m high Wittstrauch is the northern secondary peak of the Frauenberg, which in turn is separated from the 365.4  m high stamp by the saddle over which Beltershäuser Straße runs . The hurricane Kyrill mid-January devastated the forest cover here in 2007 from far away visible.
