Vladimir Konstantinovich Konovalov
Vladimir Konovalov ( Russian Владимир Константинович Коновалов , actually Вульф Калманович Коновалов / Wulf Kalmanowitsch Konovalov; born November 22, jul. / 5. December 1911 greg. In Nadjoschnoje (now Nadijne, Ukraine ); † 29. November 1967 in Leningrad ) was U -Boat -Commander of the Soviet Navy ( Baltic Fleet ) in World War II .
Konovalov was born into a Jewish family in the Nadjoschnoje agricultural colony in southeastern Ukraine (now Ukrainian: Надійне / Nadijne, Huljajpole district , Zaporizhia Oblast ).
As commander of the submarine L-3 during the Second World War, Konovalov sank the German cargo ship Goya on April 16, 1945 , which was used to evacuate East Prussia. There were refugees and soldiers on board, including the wounded. After two torpedo hits, the Goya sank within about seven minutes. 7,000 people died, including many children, women and the elderly. Konovalov received the Hero of the Soviet Union award on July 8, 1945 for the sinking .
In the course of his career Konovalov was awarded the Order of Lenin three times, the Order of Ushakov Second Class, twice the Order of the Great Patriotic War First Class and twice the Order of the Red Star .
In the novel The Hunt for Red October and the film of the same name , the fictional Soviet attack submarine of the nuclear-powered Project 705 is mentioned by V. K. Konovalov .
