history
The closed residential complex Kohlmannstrasse No. 1 to 8 with 169 apartments at that time , most of them as single rooms around 20 m² in size for working single people, is a two-storey residential group with an office / residential building (No. 4), which was built from 1954 to 1956 . The six houses in the style of the 1950s, whitewashed at the time, with slightly inclined monopitch roofs , are in an open, relaxed design on a green area by a pond. The client was the non-profit housing and settlement company mbH (Gewoba) in Bremen. "Mockers" - it was said - "that's why they call them walk-in closets ".
This residential complex was built shortly after the Marcusallee 2/4 residential complex of the US Consulate General of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in Bremen, which could well have served as a model. The ensemble can be seen as an early example of neighborhood building. The undisturbed living area was accessed via a cul-de-sac. The standardized L-shaped floor plans of the buildings did not follow the linear construction method typical of the time . The glazed and transparent facade elements are remarkable. The apartments have long been popular with young people with low incomes. In the architecture guide of bremen , the residential complex u. a. Executed: "Five building complexes with the most modern lines, in which glass plays an important role, are placed in the wonderfully situated park with the small lake". “The living room has a parquet floor and contains a sleeping alcove and a large built-in wardrobe. Large windows and a small loggia provide plenty of light and air. "
In 1988 consideration was given to demolishing or renovating the residential complex. However, the housing company GEWOBA decided in the early 1990s to preserve the poorly insulated building through extensive renovation. In 1994, Gewoba received recognition for this exemplary repair as part of the BDA Bremen award. Even today (2018) the buildings are used for residential purposes and as offices for service providers.
