House fire in Backnang 2013

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The house fire in Backnang occurred in the early morning of March 10, 2013 in Backnang . A Turkish mother and seven of her ten children died in a residential building, while three people were able to get to safety, including the grandmother. This raised serious allegations against the landlord for ailing power cables. Several weeks after the fire, investigators announced that the fire had come about through negligent use of an open fire or a smoldering object - possibly a cigarette.

building

The building, an approximately 100-year-old former complex of a disused leather goods factory, is located in the Gerberviertel, not far from the Murr . In the course of its many years of use, the building was extended and rebuilt several times and now accommodated several apartments, shops and restaurants.

procedure

The first emergency calls were received by the at 4:30 am Integrated control center in Waiblingen one. Three minutes later, a full alarm was triggered for the volunteer fire brigade in the city center, and the first emergency vehicles arrived at the scene of the fire seven minutes after the alarm was raised. During the arrival of the first, the fire brigade chief Daniel Köngeter also had the other departments in the Backnang districts alerted. The top priority at the start of the mission was the rescue of missing people, which turned out to be very difficult due to the nested and confusing construction of the fire object. Three missing people were rescued from a rooftop terrace where they had saved themselves from the flames. In the meantime, the fire spread over the entire roof structure due to missing or permeable fire protection walls. Two restaurants in the building complex, which were still well frequented at the time of the fire, were cleared by the police and fire brigade. Other fire departments from the neighboring communities of Murrhardt , Oppenweiler , Winnenden and Schwäbisch Hall were alerted to support the fire fighting. The extinguishing water supply was ensured, among other things, via a double B-line from the Murr , as the hydrant network could no longer provide the required amounts of water. After about an hour, the fire was so much under control that the breathing apparatus wearers could begin to search the rooms of the complex for the missing persons. Gradually, the bodies of the 40-year-old mother and seven of her ten children between the ages of six months and 16 years were found. After the criminal police began investigating the fire, the fire department handed over the scene to the police at 9:30 p.m.

The five alerted fire brigades deployed a total of 23 vehicles, including three turntable ladders , and 117 emergency services, plus 16 members of the regular rescue service with six ambulances and two emergency doctor vehicles , 45 stand-by members of the German Red Cross and 21 members of the emergency chaplaincy . The police were on site with up to 78 emergency services.

Investigations into the cause of the fire

While a technical defect or improper use of a wood-burning stove came into question as the cause of the fire, according to initial assumptions, arson with a xenophobic background was quickly ruled out. In addition to the German authorities, Turkish and Swiss fire investigators were also involved in the investigation into the cause.

At the beginning of April, the investigating public prosecutor announced that the fire had broken out as a result of negligent arson in the area of a sofa in the guest room of the apartment on fire. The most likely cause is the cause of the fire "by handling open fire or with a smoldering object in the apartment", according to the Stuttgart public prosecutor. A technical defect and an arson attack could be excluded as the cause of the fire. After the interrogated witnesses invoked their right to refuse to give evidence , the public prosecutor's investigations were closed in May 2014.

Reactions

A first press conference was held at noon while the mission was still ongoing in order to satisfy the strong media interest. In the afternoon, Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann, together with the Turkish Ambassador Hüseyin Avni Karslıoğlu and State Interior Minister Reinhold Gall, arrived at the scene of the accident to get an idea of the situation.

Two days after the fire, after a memorial service in Backnang, at which Deputy Prime Minister Nils Schmid was also present , the eight bodies were transferred to Turkey on a Turkish Airlines plane , where they were buried after an autopsy .
