Wojciech Michał Lemański (born September 22, 1960 in Legionowo ) is a Polish clergyman. He became known for his public opposition to the leadership of the Polish Catholic Church .

Life

Lemański was ordained a priest in 1987 . He then worked in Poland before moving to Belarus in 1990 . There he was responsible for four parishes. In 1997 he returned to Poland where he was pastor in Otwock until 2000 . There he began to work for Polish-Jewish reconciliation and drove to the site of the Jedwabne massacre every year . He deplored the silence of the Catholic Church on this matter. In 2006 he was transferred to the much smaller town of Jasienica ( Masovian Voivodeship ). However, the topic of Jews was still relevant to him and so he organized, among other things, trips to the memorial of the Treblinka extermination camp .

In 2008 Wojciech Lemański was awarded the Polonia Restituta order for his commitment to remembering Polish Jews and the Holocaust . It was presented to him by President Lech Kaczyński in the presence of Israeli President Shimon Peres .

He came into conflict with the pastors of the surrounding parishes of Jasienica and the Archbishop Henryk Hoser . In June 2010, Hoser issued a decree on the transfer of Lemański. After Lemański contradicted this and was supported by his community, the decree was withdrawn. In the conflict with the local school, which is being carried out in court, the archbishop forbade him from teaching religion . Wojciech Lemański began to publish his criticism of the Catholic Church on the Internet. In 2011 he published an open letter to Wiesław Mering in which he described his public criticism of Adam Boniecki as "unworthy of a bishop and a Christian" . This immediately made him a star in the Polish media world. He began to write for the features section of the popular NaTemat.pl , and he also published some articles for Gazeta Wyborcza . His publications led to an admonition by the Catholic Church. When he was criticized in the magazine Idziemy ( Let's go ) by Rev Henryk Zieliński for his tolerant stance on the topic of in vitro fertilization , he replied that critics like pedophiles in the ranks of the clergy and money laundering first care of the church. As a result, he was forbidden to speak to the media on May 24, 2013 and threatened with suspension.

On July 5, 2013, he was suspended by the Archbishop of Warsaw, Henryk Hoser, with effect from July 14, because he did not show sufficient respect and obedience to the diocese and the teaching of the Church in relation to bioethics. However, Lemański announced in writing that he would not follow the request. After the service on July 14th, three of Hoser's representatives asked him to resign personally. However, his parish stood behind him and after tumultuous scenes the representatives were made to withdraw. A few hours later, however, Lemański announced his resignation. The open resistance brought Lemański coverage on the front pages of Gazeta Wyborcza and Newsweek Polska .

Wojciech Lemański at the Woodstock stop in 2014

At the end of June 2014, Bishop Henryk Hoser changed his previous decision about the early retirement of Lemański and appointed him chaplain at the Mazovian Center for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Zagórze . Lemański asked for a 1-year vacation, but in the absence of Hoser's consent, he accepted the position of chaplain on July 28, 2014. Nevertheless, Lemański stayed in many media, including a. active at the Woodstock stop in 2014. On August 22, 2014, he was therefore suspended without notice by Henryk Hoser . The reason given was a lack of remorse and discussions with journalists despite the ban.
