The Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte Galaxy is an irregular galaxy in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is located at the very edge of the local group , about three million light years away from the solar system and has a maximum diameter of 8,000 light years.
Around WLM there is an extended halo of very faint reddish stars, the stars in the central area appear bluish and are therefore younger.
The object was named after the astronomers Max Wolf , Knut Lundmark and Philibert Jacques Melotte : It was discovered by Wolf in 1909 and identified as a galaxy by Lundmark and Melotte around 15 years later.
