Wolf Breidenbach
Wolf Breidenbach (* August 1750 in Breitenbach ; † February 27, 1829 in Offenbach am Main ) was a German banker and court factor . He is considered to be the author of the replacement of the body duty .
Live and act
Breidenbach, born to poor parents, was sent to Frankfurt am Main to study the Talmud as a boy . Due to his outstanding analytical skills, he became acquainted with the Isenburg Counts, and they made him a court factor. Through his business, especially the jewelery trade, Breidenbach also became acquainted with the Hessian landgrave , who made him his court financier after the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss to elector .
At his suggestion, Carl Ludwig Moritz abolished the Leibzoll in Isenburg in 1803, a levy to be paid by Jews for their personal protection and thus for their physical integrity. In 1804 he collected money among Jews in order to work for a repeal at the Regensburg Reichstag in the same year, and in the following years he succeeded in abolishing the Jewish customs in other German countries. The last German Leibzoll was abolished in Saxony on September 28, 1813. Therefore Breidenbach was called "advocate of his fellow believers".
Breidenbach's grave is in the old cemetery in Offenbach am Main.
