Professional background

From 1964 to 1970 Wolf D. Hartmann studied at the Faculty of Engineering Economics at the Technical University of Dresden , specializing in mechanical engineering , and then as a research student at the Berlin School of Economics . The graduate economist received his doctorate there in 1971 on "principles and tasks of a system-compatible design of forecasting work to increase its effectiveness for perspective planning". His habilitation thesis at the TU Dresden in 1975 dealt with the "criticism of bourgeois theories and practices of the management of industrial research and development (innovation theories)".

In 1970 he started at the Berlin University of Economics (Chair of Forecasting and Planning of Science and Technology) with teaching and research tasks in the field of forecasting and evaluating innovative trend breaks. He was then appointed university lecturer and in 1983 full professor, with research, teaching and publications in the following areas:

  • International management criticism
  • Research and development management
  • International innovation management
  • Evaluation and decision-making methods
  • Creativity techniques

with special consideration of trend breaks caused by technology and fashion.

From the beginning of 1987 to the end of 1989 he was director of the fashion institute of the GDR with approx. 350 designers, constructors and engineers as well as trend researchers for innovations for approx. 420,000 employees in the fashionable consumer goods industry including numerous special tasks for international trade fair participation, object and personnel as well as Olympic equipment. He was also a university professor for innovation design.

After taking over the chairmanship of leadership techniques and management consulting at the Institute for Organization at the Berlin School of Economics for a few months in 1990, he switched to the free market economy and was dismissed as a university lecturer.

From 1991 to 2005 he was head of the KSI Klaus Steilmann Institute for Innovation and Environment GmbH in Bochum at the Steilmann Group (1991 one of the largest clothing companies in Europe with a turnover of approx. DM 1.8 billion and 18,000 employees). During this time he implemented numerous international innovation projects on eco-innovations, industrial made- to-measure clothing and functional expansions of fashion products ( wearable computing ). Finally, he participated in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's ILP program, developing innovative training programs for Eastern Europe.

At the same time, Hartmann acted as managing director for two years for the development and marketing of the EcoTextil technology center in Bochum to attract tenants, investors and funding projects.

Since 1993 he has been a part-time professor at the private University of Witten / Herdecke , initially as head of the chair for corporate development and technology assessment in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences until the structural reorganization in 1999, then as a research professor on innovation culture in the Institute for Comparative Economic Research in the Faculty of Economics.

Since 2000 he has expanded the spectrum of the KSI Klaus Steilmann Institute for Innovation and Environment GmbH in Bochum to include intelligent innovation design, ambient intelligence and smart products. He also led EU, BMBF and state funding projects in innovation networks and environmental protection. In 2002 he installed the KSI Klaus Steilmann Institute for Innovation and Environment at the Brandenburg Technical University (BTU Cottbus) and took on a visiting professor for Evonetics, a research branch he founded.

Since 2001 he has been a part-time director of the Institute for Innovation Management founded by Dieter Haustein in 1991.

In 2005 and 2006 he co-founded the first European stock corporation Go East Invest SE in Berlin, which made headlines in connection with the purchase and sale of the former GDR broadcasting site and his idea of founding a major MEM City project for music, entertainment and media.

In 2007 and 2008 Hartmann was Academic Director of the Business and Information Technology School Iserlohn for the planned Lutherstadt Wittenberg campus to set up environmental and climate protection-oriented courses, which were not pursued after the majority purchase of BiTS by Laureate Education Inc.

Since August 2009 he has been director of the Brandenburg Academy for Health Sciences and Technology in Bad Saarow .
