In his powerful and large-format behind-glass painting, Hamm visualizes a pictorial universe that encompasses people's private relationships, mythical narratives and processes in society and history. Hamm undertakes a revision of the visual modernism: kitsch, parody and pathos are intertwined. Complex image structures in the border area between abstraction and narrative objectivity, overlaps and superimpositions of visual scenes characterize his work. In this respect, his work is always to be understood as a confrontation with tradition: he ties in with the classical canon with his themes, motifs and artistic processes, but uses materials of his time and formulates his questions from a contemporary context.

Conceptually, Hamm's work is initially close to surrealism , but the artist is less concerned with exploring dream worlds and the unconscious. Rather, Hamm uses the surreal alienation as a cipher to make complex relationships in the real world visually understandable. The sometimes fantastic, narrative tableaus thus become projection surfaces on which Hamm comments on current events, the state of the world and the human condition in general.
