Wolff-Dietrich Webler (born April 28, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German sociologist and historian (focus on science and educational research from the micro level of teaching, learning and knowledge processes to the macro level of international system comparisons) and publisher (UniversitätsVerlagWebler in Bielefeld).

Life

Wolff-Dietrich Webler studied history and sociology with minor subjects in public law and pedagogy at the Universities of Heidelberg and Mannheim with a master's degree in history from 1965 to 1972 . He was an advisor to the General Assembly of Heidelberg University (1968/1969) as well as the commissioner for study reform, evaluation and quality assurance of the Faculty of History and Philosophy (1969 to the end of 1973).

He held teaching positions at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Heidelberg from 1973 to 1976. He then moved to Bielefeld University . He had a double membership both in the Faculty of Sociology (teaching areas of educational / professional sociology and educational planning with a practical focus on science and educational planning) and in the local Interdisciplinary Center for University Didactics (IZHD), initially a development officer, then he was periodically managing director there from 1974 to 2005. At the same time, he was a member of the Center for Science and Practice at Bielefeld University from 1974 to 1980.

In 1979 he started at the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University with a dissertation on “State and universities. Empirical and theoretical development using the example of Baden-Wuerttemberg ”for a doctorate in social sciences. In 1981 he had a research stay at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education / University of Toronto (OISE) and at McGill University , Montreal , in 1983/84 research stays at Princeton University ( New Jersey / USA ) and University of New Brunswick ( Fredericton / Canada ). In separate proceedings at the Universities of Bielefeld (1981) and Essen (1994), the fulfillment of both the appointment requirements for a professorship for university didactics and that for sociology was determined (respective habilitation adequacy).

This was followed by the establishment and management of the university evaluation project group at the IZHD Bielefeld from 1991 to 2005 with evaluations of teaching, study and research at 80 departments of universities and technical colleges as well as of smaller universities in Germany. From 1991 Webler was the managing editor of the magazine “Das Hochschulwesen” until 2001 at Luchterhand Verlag. From 1994 to 1996 he was a deputy professor for sociology (especially educational and professional sociology) at the University of Essen. Since 1999 he has been the founder, member and temporarily head of the “Interdisciplinary Center for Teaching and Learning at Universities”, a joint institution of the 7 universities and academies in Yaroslavl / Volga. In 2003 he was awarded an honorary professorship at the State Pedagogical University in Yaroslavl / Russia. From 2005 he participated in the founding and management of the Institute for Science and Education Research Bielefeld (IWBB). In 2007 he was appointed Professor of Higher Education at the University of Bergen in Norway. He has been the founder and managing partner of the University Publishing House Webler (UVW) in Bielefeld since 2002.

other activities

Webler was chairman of the Great Senate of Heidelberg University from 1969/1970, co-founder and chairman of the entire university council of the state of Baden-Württemberg 1970 to 1973 and founding member of the science research section of the German Society for Sociology (DGS) in 1978. He was in the lead of the project "Social history of learned teaching from antiquity to the present" with exhibitions on the university under National Socialism and on the social history of learned teaching from 1983 to 1986. He was also the spokesman for the Education and Training Section of the DGS (1988 to 1992) and the spokesman for the DGS research group (1988 to 1996). From 1989 to 2001 he was a member of the federal board of the Working Group for University Didactics (AHD), 12 years of which was its chairman. He was also a founding member of the international consortium for Educational Development in Higher Education (ICED) and from 1993 to 2001 a member of its management. As an expert of the DAAD he was for the Phare project of the European Union "Management and Excellence in Higher Education and High Quality in College Education" in Lithuania 1997 to 1998 and for the TACIS project of the European Union "Support for the Strengthening of the Accreditation System in Higher Education in Ukraine “1997-1999. He also received short assignments on behalf of GTZ in Zimbabwe and Ethiopia for further training of university teachers in 1998 and 2007/2009. From 1999 to 2005 he was part of the management of the project “Training multipliers for teaching skills at Russian universities” (DAAD / Robert Bosch Foundation) in Yaroslavl / Volga. From 2005 to 2008 he was a member of the steering group of the EU project Network of European Tertiary Level Educators (NETTLE) and coordinator of the topic group “Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Since 2007 he has participated in the annual event of the “Hochschulforum Sylt. He is the founder and co-editor of the magazines "Quality in Science (QiW)", "Personnel and Organizational Development in Teaching and Research Institutions (P-OE)", "University Management (HM)", "Journal for Advice and Studies (ZBS) ) "And" Research. Politics - Strategy - Management ”. From 2008 to 2011 he was a member of the jury of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate for the award of state prizes for teaching and study reform.
