Wolfgang Baumann (swimmer)

Wolfgang Baumann (born November 26, 1939 in Bremen ; † August 27, 2017 in Butzbach near Frankfurt) was a German swimmer with several German and European swimming records.

biography

Baumann graduated from the business school in Bremen. He trained at the Bremen Swimming Club from 1885 (BSC) with trainer Karl-Walter Fricke (1912-2006) and before important fights up to six or seven km a day. As a swimmer, he was very versatile in the freestyle , butterfly and back positions .

As a 16-year-old Baumann set a new European record for 25-meter indoor lanes in the Bremer Zentralbad in 1955 with 55.5 seconds over 100 meters. In April 1957, he set two German swimming records: he swam the 100 m crawl in 56.2 seconds and thus undercut the record that had existed for 21 years by 6/10 seconds. The next day he swam the 100 m butterfly in 1: 02.7 seconds and undercut the existing record of 1: 03.3 seconds. In 1957 he swam a European record over 100 m crawl in 55.5 seconds in Bremen's central swimming pool.

Baumann and the 100 m crawl relay from the Bremer Swim Club with u. a. Horst Bleeker , Karl-Heinz Henfling, Hans Hirsch, Uli Rademacher and L. Thilo were of national importance in the 1950s and 1960s. They were also commonly called the "frogs". For a decade, the Bremer Zentralbad with its fast track was a popular venue for the BSC's International Swimming Festival with many Olympic and world champions.
