Wolfgang Bengs (born June 18, 1942 ) is a former German soccer player. In the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , he played for BSG Stahl Riesa between 1968 and 1973 . He then worked as a trainer for several second division teams.

Athletic career

Until 1968, Wolfgang Bengs played for the company sports club (BSG) Stahl Brandenburg , where he had already been active as a young player. In his last season in Brandenburg he was district champion at the age of 26. For the 1968/69 season he moved to BSG Stahl Riesa, which had just been promoted to the GDR league. There he found a regular place as a defender, he played 22 of the 26 league games. Until 1971, Bengs kept his place in the regular eleven, but had to pause several times after the fifth league match day of the 1971/72 season and so only came to fifteen point games. After this season Stahl Riesa had to relegate back to the GDR league , but managed to get promoted again immediately. The fully operational Bengs, who was able to play 19 of the 22 league games and all eight promotion games, was also involved in this. For the season 1973/74 Stahl Riesa Bengs had been nominated for the league team, but with her he was only used for half-time on the eighth match day. After ten point games for the second team of BSG Stahl in the GDR league, Bengs had to pay tribute to his persistent knee problems and ended his career as a competitive athlete after 85 league games and 29 games in the GDR league. He then worked as a trainer, initially from 1976 to 1980 for the GDR league club Motor Babelsberg . There he jumped in the 1979/80 season for two league games again as a player, but could not avoid relegation. Bengs then moved to the GDR league promoted Motor Süd Brandenburg , but with whom he did not manage to stay in the league . After he had then taken over the Glindower BSG Eintracht in the third class district league , he later did not return to the higher class football.
