Wolfgang Boehm (mathematician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfgang Boehm (Böhm) (born May 12, 1928 in Danzig ; † May 1, 2018 ) was a German mathematician .

Life

Boehm studied, did his doctorate and completed his habilitation at the TU Berlin . In 1965 he accepted a position at the Technical University of Braunschweig . He was a co-founder of Computer Aided Geometric Design (short: CAGD ) in Germany and was visiting professor at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy , at the University of Northwest China in Xi'an and the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas . He was the co-founder and senior editor of the international magazine CAGD and has been retired since the mid-1990s.

meaning

Wolfgang Boehm was one of the international pioneers of CAGD and geometric modeling . He was the author of several basic works and articles on applied geometry and geometry in CAD ; his monographs have seen several editions and translations. Boehm's book on geometric concepts sensitively teaches geometric thinking as every mathematician or engineer should have known. As early as 1952 he gave a surprisingly simple geometric proof of the thread construction for surfaces of the second order. In 1980 he discovered that the de Boor algorithm can also insert nodes.

Boehm is regarded as the scientific discoverer of Paul de Casteljau , whose work became the scientific basis for the representation of curves and surfaces in industrial production ( numerical control ). In 1993 he discovered JCF Haase as the forerunner of the recursive construction algorithm for rational Bézier curves .
