Wolfgang Engler (* 1952 in Dresden ) is a German university professor for cultural sociology and aesthetics as well as a publicist . From 2005 to 2017 he was rector of the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art in Berlin (HfS).

Life and work

Engler attended a polytechnic high school in East Berlin and learned to be an IT specialist after finishing school. In addition to his professional training, he earned his Abitur at the adult education center and then studied philosophy (1973–1978) at the Humboldt University in Berlin . After studying research and receiving his doctorate in 1980, he worked as a research assistant at the Central Institute for Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . Since autumn 1981 he has been a research assistant at the Institute for Drama Directing, which was later integrated into the HfS. In 1987 he was entrusted with the theory department and until 1991 Vice Rector for Social Sciences. In 1992 he became professor of cultural sociology and aesthetics at the "Ernst Busch" drama school in Berlin, which in 2003 appointed him honorary professor . In 2005 he became its rector. With his re-election by the University's Extended Academic Senate on July 12, 2013, he was confirmed in office for the next four years. After his retirement in September 2017, Engler remained a lecturer in the directing department. During his rectorate, Engler played a key role in bringing together the various courses at the HfS on a central campus that will open in October 2018

In the summer semester of 1990 he was a visiting professor at the Technical University of Hanover , and in the fall semester of 1990/91 he was a substitute professor at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. In 1994/95 Wolfgang Engler worked as a guest editor in the features section of the Hamburg weekly “Die Zeit”. During this time he continued to teach at the HfS as a research assistant with a break.

In his articles for Die Zeit , the daily newspaper , the Berliner Zeitung , the Süddeutsche Zeitung and for the newspapers for German and international politics , he describes ways of life in East and West and subjects the zeitgeist of modernity to a critical analysis. In his publication Citizens, Without Work , he calls for the realignment of society from a right to work to a right to income.
