Wolfgang Friedt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfgang Friedt (born December 4, 1946 in Breitenthal , Nahe) is a German agricultural scientist and professor emeritus at the University of Giessen . He is one of the outstanding experts in the field of special plant breeding, especially for cereals and rapeseed.

Live and act

Friedt studied agricultural sciences at the University of Bonn (1968–1971) and then worked as a scientist at the Biological Federal Institute in Braunschweig in the field of genetic resistance research (1971–1984). During this time Friedt did his doctorate under Gerhard Fischbeck with the topic: Investigations on autotetraploid barley with special consideration of diploidization at the Technical University of Munich for Dr. agr. and was a visiting professor for plant genetics at the University of Bayreuth and a scholarship holder at Kyoto University in Japan (1984). Friedt completed his habilitation at the University of Bayreuth in genetics and plant breeding with the subject: Investigations into the genetic effects of chromosome and genome manipulations and their significance for grain breeding . In 1985 he was appointed professor for plant breeding at the University of Giessen. From 1992–1993 and 1998–1999 he was dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment and in 2013 retired.

Scientific achievements

Friedt's main research interests are genetic diversity, breeding science and plant breeding including biotechnology, genetics and genomics, with an emphasis on major crops such as barley (Hordeum vulgare), bread wheat (Triticum aestivum), sorghum (S. bicolor) and oilseed rape (Brassica napus).

The most important research topics were during his active time

  • the genetic basis of biomass and grain yield as well as future yield trends in cultivated plants (e.g. wheat)
  • genetic basis of heterosis, MS systems and hybrid breeding in winter barley, rape and sorghum
  • Relevance and importance of the structure and function of root systems for resource efficiency and agronomic performance of crops
  • Disease resistance and tolerance to environmental factors such as drought and cold
  • Seed development and important seed compounds (starch, lipids, protein, fiber) in oil and protein cultures
