Nordinsana ( Indonesian Insana Utara ) is an Indonesian district ( kecamatan ) in the west of the island of Timor , on the banks of the Savu Sea .

The district is located in the north of the administrative district of North Central Timor (Timor Tengah Utara) of the East Nusa Tenggara Province (Nusa Tenggara Timur) . In the east is the Biboki Moenleu district , southeast Central Insana (Insana Tengah) , in the south Insana Fafinesu , southwest East Miomaffo (Miomaffo Timur) and in the west Naibenu . In the north lies the Sawu Sea. In the northwest, Nordinsana extends to the Oe-Cusse Ambeno exclave belonging to the state of East Timor .

Nordinsana has an area of ​​53.84 km² and is divided into the five Desa Humusu Sainiup and Fatumtasa in the south, Humusu Oekolo in the east and Oesoko and Humusu Wini in the north on the coast. The administrative headquarters are in Wini . The entire territory is less than 500  m above sea level . As usual in Timor, the climate is divided into a rainy season from December to March and a dry season from June to September. In recent years the length of the rainy season has increased. An average of 54 rainy days and an annual rainfall of 906 mm were recorded in 2017.

Residents

In 2017 there were 10,247 inhabitants in Nordinsana. 5,127 were men, 5,120 women. The population density was 190 people per square kilometer. 9,553 people professed their Catholic faith, 330 were Protestants and 364 people were Muslim. The district had a Catholic church and seven chapels, as well as a Protestant church and a mosque.

Economy, infrastructure and transport

Directly west of Wini is a border crossing to the East Timorese exclave Oe-Cusse Ambeno. Wini has a port, the center of the village is a little inland. Manganese ore is exported via the port , but only ships with less than 5000 gross tons can be served. In 2017 the port was called by 43 ships from the region. 89,365 tons were exported through the port and 23,708.16 tons were imported. 95.53% of the households in the district make a living from agriculture. Cattle (6,256), horses (85), buffalo (66), pigs (3,747), goats (3,667), ducks (350) and chickens (7,803) are kept as pets. Maize is grown on 755 hectares, rice on 589 hectares, manioc on 124 hectares, sweet potatoes on 25 hectares, peanuts on 35 hectares and green beans on five hectares. Other agricultural products include oranges, papayas, mangoes, chilies, onions, coconuts, cashews, coffee, cocoa, hazelnuts, betel nuts, pepper and bananas. 125 people work as fishermen. There are 22 fishing boats without an engine, 13 with an outboard engine and 15 with a built-in engine. Fish are also raised in 41 fish ponds. Bamboo, teak, mahogany and Falcataria moluccana are extracted from the forests that still exist . In 2017, 430 tons of salt were extracted in salt pans. There is a market each in Fatumtasa and Humusu Wini.

There are ten elementary schools, five middle schools, and one secondary school in Nordinsana. A community health center ( Puskesmas ), two medical care centers ( Puskesmas Pembantu ) and three midwifery centers ( Polindes ) are available for medical care .
