Kefamenanu ( Kefa for short ) is the capital of the administrative district ( Kabupaten ) of North Central Timor ( East Nusa Tenggara Province ) in the Indonesian part of West Timor .

geography

Kefamenanu located in the center of the administrative district on the road from Atambua to Soe (city) . Another overland road leads to the northwest to Oesilo in the East Timorese exclave of Oe-Cusse Ambeno . Smaller roads go to Wini on the coast in the north and Eban in the west.

As Kota Kefamenanu, the city ​​forms its own administrative unit at district level ( Kecamatan ) and is in turn divided into nine Kelurahan :

population

41,848 people live in Kefamenanu (2013). The majority of the inhabitants are Catholic. Several churches from the colonial era can still be found in the city.

history

Kefamenanu used to be a Portuguese post in a region that became a bone of contention with the Netherlands . It was not until the ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration on June 25, 1914 that Dutch rule over this region of Timor was secured . On September 22, 1922, the Dutch founded a town at the old post and made it the administrative headquarters of the North Central Timor subdivision ( Onderafdeling Noord-Midden Timor ). In 1923 the administration building was built, which today houses the local archive.

Kefamenanu was one of the many refugee camps for East Timorese who were forcibly evacuated to West Timor during the East Timor crisis in 1999 .

economy

The region has been a center of manganese extraction since 2007 . The ore is exported through the ports of Kupang, Atambua and Wini. Kefamenanu is also known for its Ikat -Webkunst.

The Maria Bitauni cave is of great tourist interest .
