Wolfgang Georg I. Count and Lord of Castell-Remlingen (* January 27, 1610 in Remlingen ; † May 4, 1668 ibid) was from 1631 to 1668 a ruler of the divided county of Castell .

The county before Wolfgang Georg I.

The decisive event in the 16th century in the county of Castell was the beginning of the Reformation . The counts introduced the new denomination throughout their territory. Predecessors of Count Wolfgang Georg, the county was temporarily divided between three brothers, initially held benefices in the Catholic dioceses in the area. In the course of time, however, they adopted the new faith and underpinned this attitude with the signing of the formula of the Concord in 1579.

The Count's direct predecessor, his father, Count Wolfgang II, was the founder of the Castell-Remlingen line . The two brothers Wolfgang and Gottfried were obliged to split the line. It was to last until the early 19th century. While Gottfried now resided in Rüdenhausen and Wiesenbronn, Wolfgang sat in Castell and Remlingen. He also began to renovate the Casteller Upper Castle before the onset of the Thirty Years' War prevented further work.

Life

Wolfgang Georg I was born on January 27, 1610 in Remlingen as the only child of Count Wolfgang II zu Castell-Remlingen and his second wife Juliana von Hohenlohe-Weikersheim . The sources are silent about the youth and education of the young count. Just eight years after the birth of Wolfgang Georg, the Thirty Years' War broke out in 1618, which initially spared the county in Franconia .

When the acts of war also reached Castell, this made itself felt through the passage of troops and contributions . The young count then joined a Swedish contingent and traveled with them through the Holy Roman Empire . After the death of his father in 1631, Wolfgang Georg took over the government. During the Count's campaigns, the castle in Castell was protected by Swedish soldiers.

After the death of the Swedish king Gustav Adolf , the Swedes dissolved this protective alliance. In the future, Castell and the county were also affected by the raids of many opponents of the war. The entire economy came to a standstill, almost all of the farmers' cattle were destroyed and the fields were deserted. After the end of the war, the reconstruction of the destroyed areas began. Wolfgang Georg I also excelled in this.

At the same time, the count was also involved in other dominions. For this purpose, he took a position at the Württemberg court in Stuttgart from 1650 . He became Landhofmeister, Privy Councilor and District President, as well as President of the Council under Duke Eberhard III. The count moved away from his population, which after the war was largely on their own. Wolfgang Georg died on May 4th 1668 in Remlingen.
