Wolfgang Hellstern (born April 14, 1938 ) is a former German soccer player and coach . The FC Hechingen striker was part of the amateur national team of the DFB under the responsible selection coach Helmut Schön in 1963 in two international matches against Italy and Japan.

career

Wolfgang Hellstern, who played for FC Hechingen from an early age, ran through various selection teams thanks to his outstanding offensive talent combined with impressive speed: in 1953/54 the youngster stormed the district selection , in 1956 he belonged to the South German selection (A-Juniors-Country Cup of the regional associations with games against North and West Germany) and from 1957 the offensive player, who was already employed with a special permit in the senior division at the age of 17, was part of the WFV selection in the national cup of amateurs.

Through his achievements in winning the championship in the 1960/61 season in the 2nd amateur league Alb-Black Forest - with 31 goals, Hellstern was the top scorer of the "Zollerstädter" - the promotion to the 1st amateur league Black Forest-Bodensee and the sensational following on the foot Championship as a climber in the amateur upper house 1961/62 - with 26 goals Hellstern was again top scorer - the successful striker of FC Hechingen had recommended himself in 1962 for a viewing course to build a new amateur national team of the DFB. He convinced in the Hennef sports school national coach Sepp Herberger and the responsible DFB coach for the amateur selection, Helmut Schön, and made his debut on April 13, 1963 at the international match in Alassio against Italy in the German amateur national team. In the 1: 2 defeat of the DFB amateurs, the attack began with Hellstern (right wing), Hans-Jürgen Himmelmann , Harald Braner , Gerhard Neuser and Wilfried Leydecker . Only the two half-strikers had international experience, the three attacking peaks in the World Cup system at the time , Hellstern, Braner and Leydecker, were debutants.

At the beginning of the 1963/64 season, in September 1963, the DFB amateur eleven played two elimination games against the GDR Olympic team in Karl-Marx-Stadt and Hanover. Hellstern was a member of Helmut Schön's DFB squad, but was not used in the two games (0: 3/2: 1). With this, the GDR representation moved into the actual Olympic qualification against the Netherlands and the Soviet Union and for Hellstern and colleagues, the Olympic dream in 1964 in Japan was over.

Despite the missed participation in the Olympic qualification, the DFB rewarded the amateurs with a trip to Japan in October 1963. Within five days, on October 12, 14 and 16, three international games were played in Tokyo against Japan B (2-1 victory), South Vietnam (2: 1 victory) and Japan A (1: 1 draw) were held as part of a “pre-Olympic tournament”, from which the German amateurs emerged as the tournament winners. In the 2-1 win on October 12, 1963 in Tokyo against Japan B, the man from Hechingen stormed on the right wing of the DFB amateur team and made his second amateur international match. He and Franz-Josef Hönig formed the right wing and Walter Birkhold , Wilhelm Zott and Horst Kunzmann were the axis of the German game in the runner row. The experience of the metropolis Tokyo, the national stadium with the presence of Crown Prince Akihito, the extremely friendly reception of the spectators, the emotional experience when the athletes march in and out of the “pre-Olympic tournament”, all became one of the unforgettable impressions in the life of Wolfgang Hellstern.

On the club side, the surprising championship win in the 1st Black Forest-Bodensee amateur league in 1961/62 stands out. With Ludwig Schlump , the former B-national player as player -coach and goalscorer Wolfgang Hellstern (26 goals), the newcomer from the former administrative district of Südwürttemberg-Hohenzollern was champion with 46:14 points and 104:50 goals. Hechingen waived participation in the promotion round to the 2nd League South.

The double fracture of the tibia in the first association game of the 1964/65 season against Villingen, on the other hand, belongs to the negative category of Hellstern's playing career.

In May 1971 he was honored as a player-coach for 500 games in the dress of FC Hechingen and given the laudation that “the club gives him great credit for turning down lucrative offers in his heyday and remaining loyal to Hechingen FC”.

After the 1972/73 season, Hellstern, who is still living in Hechingen in 2013, gave up his position as player-coach for professional reasons and withdrew from active football.
