Wolfgang Hillmann (born January 21, 1945 in Schorssow, Mecklenburg ) was a football player in the GDR Oberliga . He played there for SC Neubrandenburg and for 1. FC Union Berlin , with whom he won the GDR Cup in 1968 .

Athletic career

Wolfgang Hillmann's football career began with the company sports association Empor in Altentreptow in Western Pomerania . At the age of 17, he went to the region's sporting center, SC Neubrandenburg, as a junior player in 1962. With his soccer team, he rose in 1964 to the highest GDR soccer league. In addition to his footballing activities, he had meanwhile also completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith. The 1.85 m tall defender played 20 of the 26 point games during the one-year league guest appearance by Neubrandenburg.

When the team, which had meanwhile been restructured to BSG Post, missed the renewed promotion to the league in 1966, Hillmann switched to 1. FC Union Berlin, which had relegated the Neubrandenburg team to second place in the battle for promotion. Hillmann was already used in the Unioner's first league league game at Hansa Rostock (1: 1). With 6th place, the Berliners were able to place themselves well in their first league season and caused a surprise a year later when they won the GDR soccer cup for the 1967/68 season. In the 2-1 victory over the GDR champions FC Carl Zeiss Jena , Hillmann was the right central defender on the pitch. In the 67th minute, he suffered a serious knee injury, which practically resulted in his end in high-performance sport. He was used three times in the following season, but with the relegation of Union in the summer of 1969, he finally said goodbye to the league. In the three seasons at Union Hillmann had completed 47 league games, plus nine national cup games and five appearances in the European Intercup .

Retired as a high-performance athlete, Hillmann was drafted into military service in November 1970. During the 18 months he was able to continue playing football with the army sports community Vorwärts Meiningen . In May 1972 he joined the Berlin GDR league promoted EAB Lichtenberg 47 and played there until the end of the 1975/76 season. Lichtenberg was relegated and Hillmann moved to the Berlin BSG Kabelwerk Oberspree , which he helped to promote to the GDR league in 1979 together with his former Union teammate Meinhard Uentz . After that, Hillmann finally ended his football career.
